London Fashion Week Day 4

Monday 15 September 2014

So, the penultimate day of London Fashion Week! It's all gone by so fast, but today I only had the Mother of Pearl show in the morning so have had the time to sit back and catch my breath a little after how hectic the weekend has been. It was also really weird as after the show finished, I had to walk and bus it home and get changed and go into college for the afternoon, which was definitely a contrast from the glitz of a morning spent under the chandeliers at Claridge's.

I wore a 1970's glittery mini dress from Beyond Retro, with a Beyond Retro skirt worn underneath. The metallic fabric and pointed collar is so clearly 70s, but also ties in nicely with the metallic fabrics making their way onto the a/w14 and s/s15 fashion scene. I accessorised with a pair of £5 cat-eye glasses from Camden market (I do love a bargain) a pair of earrings and a Trifari bracelet from Hirst Antiques.

The Mother of Pearl show started at 9.30am, so it was an early start (and a lot of last minute makeup in the car on the way) but we managed to make it there on time, and after nervously presenting my invite I was shown inside, where I spent a good while gawping at the chandeliers and amazing decor before the door to the ballroom opened, and we were allowed inside. We were pointed towards the front row, as we were the first few in - from standing at the back of Topshop to sitting 'in the frow' in one day...fashion week will never cease to amaze me.

I had an amazing spot, and was opposite Leandra Medine from The Man Repeller, which was incredible as she is such an icon for me.
The collection still held on to Mother of pearl's sporty aesthetic, combining sixties styles, shapes and prints with flats and a loose athletic outline. It all had a very retro feel to it, whilst three-dimensional embellishment (also seen at Jean-Pierre Braganza, Holly Fulton and Topshop) and up to date fabrics kept the collection modern and fresh. I loved the way it felt somewhat liberating; the models could walk comfortably, the sheer pieces were not overly revealing, everything flowed and looked ready to be worn and moved about in. To think Coco Chanel was the first to introduce the comfortable, wearable suit for women in the late 1950s, and now we have collections like this one that focus more on accentuating and accommodating the body instead of exploiting it, and manage to maintain a sharp, clean and attractive look whilst also seeming practical, wearable and comfortable.

Tomorrow is the last day of London Fashion Week, so I will be going down to Somerset House for the last time after college until February! I've actually really enjoyed being so involved and reporting properly on it this year, and am looking forward to writing up about it further when it's over. I am going to really miss the abundance of free popcorn and coconut water though...
