dizzy in the head and I'm feeling blue (London Fashion Week day 2)

Saturday, 15 February 2014

After what has felt like an eternity, I am finally on holiday from school - meaning I can spend my days scuttling around on public transport, skipping through Regents Park in the torrential rain, and crying into my bar of galaxy chocolate whilst watching the latest heart-wrenching blockbuster (all of these I managed to do yesterday). Today, however, I decided to head over to Somerset House and check out the second day of London Fashion Week.
I'd never actually been before - last year I had only just started blogging, and was too shy to go by myself to such a big event. I felt somewhat calmer this year, and was pleasantly surprised by the chilled atmosphere. Everyone was just enjoying fashion, whether they were taking photographs, posing for photographs, waiting to see a show or just simply socialising. There was no judgement, no 'what the hell is THAT doing here?' and instead a very upbeat and positive interest in the diverse styles on display. If you aren't sure about going...go! It's free, and you can just turn up and wander around and soak up all the creativity, without needing any sort of invite or ticket.

After many outfit changes and several almost panic attacks, I decided to wear my jacket and clutch from Beyond Retro, with my shirt from Clothes Show, shorts from the charity shop (a bargain at £8) tights from H&M, and shoes from Rokit. I was a little unsure as to the dress code, but was happy to see that literally anything goes. It was all about personal style, with people in a whole variety of combinations ranging from floor length dresses to jeans and even tracksuits. Coats were a huge thing - the bigger and longer the better, with bold colours like yellow and blue standing out and over-exciting all of the street style photographers.

I ended up getting photographed a lot, which isn't something I'd expected at all....but as the typical weirdo that I am, I enjoyed every second. It was lovely to be able to take photos of other people's outfits as well, without feeling like you were getting in the way or wasting their time. Everyone was like a piece of art, and it didn't matter what you looked like, everyone else was only interested in the way you had chosen to express yourself through your clothes. It was amazing to be around so many fashionable people - I literally couldn't handle all the amazing-ness at once, especially as it was the men as well as the women who had their style on point this season. I love men who are interested in fashion...I respect and admire anyone who cares about their image, and to see men and women both dressed so freely, without the normal social confinements of gender-dressing was wonderful.

I'd never actually shot street style before - I have always been too shy and too worried that I would interrupt something important by asking for a picture. It was a lovely introduction to the job, and I really enjoyed being able to show my love of the wearer's clothes by wanting to take a visual note of them. It's worth doing, and is super fun as you get to meet and talk to a whole host of really lovely people at the same time.

In other news, I went to see the new Spike Jonze film 'Her', which came out yesterday. I love movies, but am usually only drawn to incredibly arty films like Amelie or Moonrise Kingdom, and repulsed by the modern, money-grabbing junk that gets churned out every year. However, after a friend of mine told me how amazing it was, I couldn't help but round up my best bud and nip down to Covent Garden to see whether 'Her' lived up to all of the current hype about it.
To put it briefly, I have never been so moved by a film in my entire life. It hit you like a wave of realisation of what we are, and what we are going to be - whilst being this arty, aesthetically pleasing blur of clean colours and de-cluttered frames. The plot is fantastic, the cinematography is phenomenal...and I was of course reduced to a sobbing, emotionally-drained wreck, crying into my bar of galaxy chocolate. It's a must see for our entire generation, and I can't physically express in words how well both the director and actors managed to twist a seemingly ridiculous idea into something so real and current. You can read my full review of it here.

I hope you are all having a good weekend...check back for more London Fashion Week updates (I'm going again tomorrow and monday). Hugs

  2. The best thing about fashion weeks is that everyone WANTS to get photographed, you know? So there's none of that disdain or annoyance when you ask. I also find it's a great way to make friends.
You looked amazing, Ellie. And now I have to see Her.

Didn't you get the feeling that everyone was dying for someone to take a picture of them?
